Popeye Featured in Wilco video!

The Wilco/Popeye collaboration continues, first there was the sunday comics page (see below video) and now there is a fine hand animated video.

“Dawned On Me” from Wilco’s Grammy-nominated new record “The Whole Love.” This collaboration with King Features presents the first hand-drawn Popeye cartoon in more than 30 years. Directed by Darren Romanelli.

Wilco Featured in Popeye Comic!

Sunday’s Popeye comic strip pays homage to two American icons: Popeye and the band Wilco. The artwork prominently features the S.S.Wilco sailing into port to deliver Wilco Brand Spinach. Hoards of people are lining up on the dock as Popeye, Olive Oyl, Bluto and the entire gang assist Wilco in handing out cans of Wilco Spinach to the crowds. The art, created by Frank Caruso and Ned Sonntag, features caricatures of Wilco band members: lead singer Jeff Tweedy, bassist John Stirratt, guitarist Nels Cline, multi-instrumentalists Pat Sansone and Mikael Jorgensen, and drummer Glenn Kotche.

I love it!

I really love this blues/soul group with a bit of retro leaning. I’ve been watching a lot of their live stuff on several blogs, and they are a tremendous live act. This band will be huge!

New York Times described them as a thunderbolt in bluejeans and as a critics dream come true.

Their own story (from www.facebook.com/theAlabamaShakes):

The story of the Alabama Shakes begins in a high school psychology class in Athens, Alabama. Brittany Howard, who had started playing guitar a few years earlier, approached Zac Cockrell and asked if he wanted to try making music together.

“I just knew that he played bass and that he wore shirts with cool bands on them that nobody had heard of” – Brittany Howard

Steve Johnson worked at the only music store in town, and Howard knew he played the drums. She invited him to a party where, she says, “he met everybody from our side of the tracks.”

The trio soon went into a studio in Decatur to record some of the songs they were working up, and this proto-demo found its way into the hands of Heath Fogg, with whom Howard had been familiar because he had been the lead guitarist in what she describes as “the best band in our high school.” Fogg, who by now had graduated from college, asked them to open a show for his band, which they agreed to do—on the condition that he play with them.

They eventually found their way to a Nashville studio in early 2011, where the songs they cut included “You Ain’t Alone” and “I Found You.”:

Justin Gage (music blogger(the Aquarium Drunkard) and fan) emailed “You Ain’t Alone” to the Drive-By Truckers’ team. The band was immediately blown away and offered the Shakes an opening slot, sight unseen. (Patterson Hood of the Truckers later noted that the group “totally blew us off the stage in Winston-Salem.”)

The band has released details of their upcoming full-length debut, Boys & Girls. The album was produced by the band and will be released on April 10th. Their first single for the album, Hold On, also appeared on their 4-song self-titled EP, released last year:

The Best Songs: I Wanna Be Your Dog – Stooges 1969

The song is featured on the album The Stooges (by The Stooges). Its classic riff, consists of only three chords and it’s played repeatedly throughout the whole song (except for a brief bridge). The 3-minute-and-9-second long song, with its raucous, distortion-heavy guitar intro, pounding, single-note piano riff played by producer John Cale and steady, driving beat, established The Stooges at the cutting edge of the “Detroit sound”. Pitchfork Media ranked it at number 16 on its list of “The 200 Greatest Songs of the 1960s”

These groundbreaking Detroit punks tapped into the brutal side of the blues for this primitive classic. They also offer a one-note piano tribute to the Kinks’ “You Really Got Me.” Over the ultimate bone-crunching three-chord guitar riff, Iggy Pop screams about the agony of teenage hormones the way only Iggy Pop can.

The opening guitar is overpowering, the central riff is a churning leviathan. But it is the one finger piano that dominates “I Wanna Be Your Dog,” a self-confessedly messed-up love song that makes even the Velvet Underground’s sagas of sexual deviation and disgrace sound somehow tame. There, after all, the beaters and the beaten sound almost guilty about their pleasures. Iggy Pop, on the other hand, revels in his subservience — “I’ll lay right down in my favorite place.”

One of the Stooges’ most-covered songs, “I Wanna Be Your Dog” became a staple in Richard Hell’s late-’70s live shows — its ghost also flavors the Sex Pistols’ “Submission.” The ultimate version, however, is that which Iggy himself thrashed out with David Bowie for their spring 1977 tour. Heard on the magnificent TV Eye live album, it packs an assaultive punch that has to be felt to be believed.

The song has been covered lots of times, and I’ve picked some to show the songs versatility and adaptability.

MikeoFreak at Songmeanings has a interpretation that I think is quite clever:

It is one of the dumbest and smartest songs ever written. Here’s why I say that.

The dumb part is that on the face of it, it seems like the guy singing the song is basically saying that he’ll be a girl’s obedient sex toy and that he’ll do whatever he’s asked to do. Much like a loyal dog. However, Iggy is actually being ironic with this. The Stooges always sang about the dark side of things like drugs and sex. He’s basically showing how sex can be demeaning to men because in a lot of cases, men will simply throw away their dignity and submit themselves to the whims and desires of the woman they like, who most likely is interested only in screwing. So on its face, this is a dumb song, but when you realize that Iggy is being ironic, it becomes a very clever tune. Thus, this song is both dumb and smart at the same time. So he’s saying, “Yeah, I’ll obey you like a dog” to a woman and “Don’t lose your dignity over sex” to you at the same time.

“Maybe I’m Amazed” is a song written by Paul McCartney that was first released on his McCartney album on 17 April 1970. The studio version from the album has never been released as a single. McCartney dedicated the song to his wife, Linda, who had helped him get through the break-up of The Beatles. Later, McCartney’s band Wings released a single of a live performance of the song from the band’s 1976 tour of America, which became a top-ten hit in the United States and reached number 26 in the United Kingdom.

No singles were taken from Paul McCartney’s self-titled solo album, but when the live album Wings Over America was released six years later, he released the live version of “Maybe I’m Amazed” (as a Wings single). This version of “Maybe I’m Amazed” is for me the definitive take. The original was good, very good, but this is great! The original was one of the highlights on “McCartney”, but it is live that the song really springs to life. It has become a true anthem.

It has been covered a lot of times, my favourite cover version is by The Faces. My God, Rod Stewart was once a fantastic rock vocalist!:

“Mr. Soul” is a song written by Canadian rock musician Neil Young, and first recorded by folk rock band Buffalo Springfield and released on their second album, Buffalo Springfield Again. It was originally recorded on January 9, 1967 at Atlantic Studios, New York with an additional recording on April 4, 1967.

The common album version and the mono single have completely different guitar solos (the mono single mix has never been reissued).

On track 3 of the album Sugar Mountain – Live At Canterbury House 1968, Young said, “A lot of songs take a long time to write. Generally they take an hour and a half, two hours to write. But this one took only five minutes.”

Young subsequently recorded several other versions of the song, often with marked stylistic changes. Of all of Young’s songs, “Mr. Soul” has been released the most times.

The track starts with cascading interweaving guitars, then Neil Young gets into his attack on the music industry, and how it can destroy young inexperienced talents. Richie Furay adds desperate wonderful background vocal, Neil Young howl his lines from a letter: “She said ‘You’re strange, but don’t change’ … and I let her.” “Is it strange I should change?” Young repeats, then he suggests a response: “Why don’t you ask her.”

They were a great band that never fulfilled their potential.

The riff is clearly taken from Satisfaction (I can’t get no) by The Rolling Stones, but what a way to do a rip off! Love and Theft, baby, Love and theft.
